S P E C I E S There are three species that reside within Silverdale: humans, vampires, and werewolves. All have roots in humanity, though the latter two are now anything but. Of Silverdale's 5,000 person population, 98% are human. As of right now, there are about two werewolves to every one vampire.
V A M P I R E S The origins of vampires is unknown, though there is a general understanding that the oldest are no more than 1,500 years old (played vampires must be under 1,000, with plot exceptions). They are typically rogue and spread across the world, though some have formed covens. Vampires are immortal.
A vampire is created when a human with vampire blood in his/her system dies. After laying dead for 24 hours, the human will rise, but as a vampire, hungry for blood and instinctively drawn to the hunting of humans. Vampires have a unique connection to the vampire that sired them; that is, they have an instinctual desire to obey and protect their sire. They can choose to resist this instinct, but it is hard to and uncomfortable.
Vampires require blood to continue their existence; if they do not feed for an extended period of time then they grow weaker and weaker until they become dormant. Vampires can only remain dormant for so long before they turn to dust. If a vampire eats food they must later vomit it up, otherwise it will rot in their stomach, as their food processing systems are shut down. If they drink a liquid other than blood then it will come out later as if urinating, though in the exact form it entered. They do not urinate blood, as it seeps into their body.
Compared to humans, vampires are above average in strength and possess super speed. Their skin is cold to the touch unless they have recently fed on blood, and they do not breathe. They must also be cautious with their hair, as it no longer grows (since they are undead). Before they feed on blood their eyes grow black, veins protrude around their eyes, and their canines elongate.
Vampire blood has healing properties within in, allowing it to heal a vampire from any wound he/she sustains, with the exception of being beheaded, run through the heart with a stake, or burned by the sun (or holy water). A vampire's blood can also be used to heal humans or werewolves; a touch of it on the outside of the skin will heal minor injuries, such as puncture wounds, while ingestion is necessary to heal larger injuries.
Vampires in covens are in possession of daylight rings, which allow them to walk when the sun is up. They must be verbally invited to come into homes owned by living individuals, and the invitation must come from the owner of the house. They do appear in digital and printed images, but not in ones that are developed from film.
Some vampires, though few and far between, develop a special ability upon being turned (limit to 1 per member).
W E R E W O L V E S According to legend, werewolves were created by witches as a way to exterminate vampires. Werewolves have been around for the last 1,000 years, and their numbers have been swiftly increasing. Werewolves begin to change into their wolf forms after puberty, at which point they begin to age twice as slow as a human, catching them looking about 40 when they are actually 100. Werewolves have a lifespan of 200 years.
Though legend tells that werewolves originally gained their abilities because of a curse, being a werewolf is now solely hereditary; getting scratched by one does not make the victim a werewolf. When reproducing, a werewolf has a 50% chance of passing this gene down to his/her child if procreating with a human, and an 80% chance of passing it if procreating with a werewolf.
Werewolves require similar diets to humans, though they all experience a kind of insatiable hunger. Their diet also calls for more meat than average; they tend to prefer raw meat, and do not discriminate between the best cuts and those usually left for scavengers.
Compared to humans, werewolves are above average in speed and possess super strength. They are extra warm to the touch, and require all the same things humans do. Werewolves experience excessive hair and nail growth. When a werewolf shifts into his/her wolf form, it is a quick, painless transition (clothes drop to the ground, they transform back naked). This shift is voluntary, except on the nights of full moons. They become wolves the size of horses, standing between 5-7 feet at the head, and stretching 8-10 feet long. They are able to both instinctively and telepathically communicate with one another in this form.
In human form, werewolves heal at the same rate as humans, but in wolf form they have accelerated regeneration. A plant called wolfsbane, however, is poison when ingested, and forces a werewolf into its human form and makes it sick as long as the werewolf is exposed. Silver bullets are a surefire way to kill a werewolf, as they stiffen the wolf's limbs and prevent regeneration. If a silver bullet hits the heart then the werewolf will die immediately.
Werewolves walk among humans because, when in their skin, they are basically human. They experience heightened emotions, and tend to have anger issues. Werewolves do have a nature-intended-mate, known of as an "imprint" out there, thought the odds of a werewolf finding his/her is slim. When they do, however, it is their instinct to want to be beside that person in a romantic way for the remainder of their lives.
